Is That Hot Car Over There a Classic, Antique or Vintage?

We often hear the terms "vintage car, antique car and classic car" used interchangeably by car lovers, but I believe most people really don't know what those classifications mean and use them incorrectly when they try and describe a vehicle. I'd like to make clear what each type of automobile is, so when you speak about the rides that strike your fancy, you will sound informed and knowledgeable!

A vintage car is commonly defined as a car built after World War I, between the years of 1919 and 1930. World War I is a nice hard date to start a timeline by. It's a bit arbitrary, as no notice was sent to auto makers to start building cars that would be "vintage", but the date helps define the nature of this period in auto history. It's when the car became part of our culture. The car in 1919 was still something of a novelty. By 1930 it was well on the way to being down right common! In fact, American automobile production numbers (by 1930-ish) were not matched again until the 1950s. The British definition is strict on 1930 being the cut-off - those Brits are like that, don't ya know. American sources are looser about the matter and prefer 1925-ish because it is the pre-classic car period as defined by the Classic Car Club of America. Some experts even consider the start of World War II as the end date of the vintage period.

So this fact brings us to the definition of the classic car period. Some authorities see the classic period as overlapping the vintage period while others don't. In part, the reason stems from the vintage designation covering all vehicles of the period, while the official classic definition does not. Strictly defined, classics only include high-end vehicles of that period. The Classic Car Club of America defines a CCCA Classic car as a fine or distinctive automobile, either American or foreign built, produced between 1925 and 1948. Generally, a CCCA Classic is expensive and limited in production. Other factors, including engine size, custom coachwork, sophisticated technology (for the time) and luxury accessories, also help determine whether a car is considered to be worthy of the title of "classic".

So then what is an antique car? This definition turns out to be really loose! The Antique Automobile Club of America defines an antique car as a vehicle which is 45 years old or older. To them, a classic vehicle is 20-45 years old. In the UK, "antique" often refers to any item more than 100 years old and cars of this age are generally termed "vintage". Basically the definition attempts to quantify the fact that 20 years is about twice the average design lifespan of most modern vehicles. Therefore, a car that's reached 25 is considered a classic, mainly because it's a little "long in the tooth" by then. These and antique cars are often not economical or easy to maintain as regular transportation. They tend to demand more of the driver, as well, due to less current technology being incorporated to share the burden of vehicle operation.

So there you have it! Vintage cars are different than classic cars. Here in America, at least, vintage cars are also antique cars. Elsewhere in the world, maybe that isn't as true. One thing is for sure, whether vintage, classic and / or antique; the terms refer to vehicles that catch our eye, stir our imaginations and capture our hearts. They are more than just simple transportation. They are "vehicles" to a different place and time that we just can't forget or not yearn to experience again.

Vintage Sounds That Turn Back Time

Vintage horns that turn back time are a big thing today. Not only are they a lot of fun, they also help drivers to feel a little unique while making their rounds. The great thing is that horn kits of this type make it possible to mimic the sounds of cars and trucks from just about any era. Here are a few examples of horns that may be just what you need to add that little bit of extra class to your ride.

Some of the most popular vintage horns are the ones that bring back the playful sounds of the early 20th century. In a time when many of the horns made the familiar "ooogah" sound, life was a lot simpler. Buying a kit with this type of old school horn will allow you to recapture a little bit of that simpler era, and provide a moment's respite from today's fast paced world where multitasking is considered the only way to go. As you cruise through town and share your horn with others, some people may be startled at first, but there is a good chance that a smile will soon appear on their faces, followed by a friendly wave.

Of course, if you want something that is a little more arresting and not quite so gentle, there is always the option of going with vintage horns with something like an old fashioned police siren. There is also the option of going with the sound of an ambulance from days gone by, or even the now forgotten sounds of the Black Marias or paddy wagons that once hauled people to the pokey in New York City. Unlike the relative gentle ooogahs of the family car, these types of horns were loud and let people know that the time to clear the street was now. You're sure to get plenty of attention with horn kits like these.

The good thing about vintage horns is that it is relatively simple to find plenty of different sounds without having to spend a lot of money. While buying any type of custom horn will mean incurring some expense, kits that produce these nostalgic sounds are among the most cost effective on the market today. Take your time and explore different horns and sounds; in no time, you'll be cruising down the road and looking for any reason to bring some old-time fun into the lives of everyone you pass.

Top 10 Must Have Auto Accessories

Personalizing the appearance and improving the driving experience of your auto is one of the great pleasures of owning your own car, SUV or truck. There are so many different auto accessories out there on the market it can be tricky to narrow down which ones you might want to consider getting to improve your vehicle. The following 10 accessories are those which we consider really are the "must haves":

1) Floor Mats - It really is pretty ridiculous that an item so basic as a floor mat is an optional extra on many new cars. If you want to protect the interior of your automobile and prolong the life of the cabin's upholstery then floor mats are an essential and worthwhile investment. Floor mats can be easily picked up from just about every auto accessory shop and even in many supermarkets.

2) Auto Covers - The last thing you want to happen to your pride and joy is for its shiny paintwork to get damaged by the elements, falling objects, or even bird droppings. By using an auto cover you can give your vehicle the protection it needs from the harsh summer sun, heavy rain and hail, corrosive bird droppings and destructive objects falling from trees or blown by the wind.

3) Cargo Liners - Like floor mats for the passenger compartment of vehicles, cargo liners are also a great accessory for keeping the trunk clean and tidy. If you are often putting dirty boots or tools in the trunk of your vehicle, for example, then a cargo liner will keep all that filth off the lining material as well as protecting against any scratches and dents.

4) Brake Dust Shields - With modern vehicles getting more and more powerful and having larger brakes, the amount of brake dust produced is increasing. Using brake dust shields on the insides of your wheels helps to prevent the dust from gathering on your shiny alloy rims, making keeping your auto clean much easier.

5) Car Bras - Bumpers on modern cars are often made from plastic which might look good but isn't able to put off with much abuse caused by stones, grit and other street debris. A car bra is a specially made protector that wraps around the bumper to shield against flying stones, insects and other debris that can cause damaging stone chips and dents.

6) Fender Flares - Travelling at speed on country roads or rarely used streets can lead to gravel, rocks and other objects flinging up and striking the paintwork of your vehicle. By fitting fender flares you can greatly reduce the amount of debris that can reach your auto's exterior. For most cars it is possible to find fender flares that match the original color and finish.

7) Mud Flaps - Further protection can be provided by the use of mud flaps which also prevent the dirty water spray containing all manner of pollutants and oil from reaching your car's paintwork.

8) Heated Seats - Driving a car throughout the long winter months without heated seats can be somewhat torturous, especially when first entering the vehicle. Heated seats can make a journey in cold weather 10 times more pleasurable.

9) iPod / iPhone / MP3 Docks - Tape cassettes and even now CDs are getting very long in the tooth. Why not make use of your iPod or MP3 player in your vehicle and invest in a dock that allows you to listen to your tunes through your car speakers. Many docks also double up as a hand-free system; much safer than talking on the phone normally.

10) Bug Shields - These are an absolute must have, particularly in the South where insects are even more prevalent. A good bug shield made specifically for your model of car or truck can do wonders in limiting the amount of insects and other debris hitting your windshield and hood. Bug shields not only help to keep your car clean, but are also a useful safety accessory helping to maintain good visibility.

Bug shields are without doubt one of the most beneficial accessories for your truck or SUV. Visit our website now to find great deals on bug shields and bug deflectors for trucks or SUVS.

2010 Rapide - Review of Aston Martin's Stretched DB9

When you are looking for a car that combines elegance and sportiness, the new Aston Martin Rapide falls nowhere short of amazement. It is all around magnificent, with its jaw dropping beauty only being the tip of the iceberg. In essence, the Rapide is a stretched DB9 which was a massive step forward for Aston Martin from the older DB7.

The Aston Martin Rapide was hand-built in the same factory as the DB9. As a result, it has all of the similar panels found on a DB9 with the same 6.0 liter V12 engine pumping out about 470 brake horsepower which is, again, the same as the DB9. This new stretched DB9 will come in from a standstill to 60 mph in a shattering 5 seconds, a mere tenth of a second slower than the DB9. And once it hits 60 mph, it will keep going and going to a claimed 188 mph.

The Rapide combines its blistering speed and power with its refined and stunning exterior, and the story is no different on the inside either. On the exterior, there is Aston Martin's signature grill and the stunning headlights. There are curves that start from the front and carry on to the back where the tail lights are similar, if not, exactly the same as the DB9's big brother, the DBS. If you ever do decide to stop looking at it from the outside, you will make your way onto the inside where elegance and luxury make you astounded. Everything that looks like wood and metal is wood and metal. And the list goes on with its satellite navigation and its heated and air conditioned seats.

The main purpose of the Rapide, however, is to allow for two extra passengers to sit comfortably in the rear seats. The rear seats can fold down for a massive trunk or you can leave them up to fit two adults comfortably for an average trip. And with the DVD system for the rear seats they won't get bored, or you could decide to listen to the amazing Bang & Olufsen stereo system.

Aston Martin's motto is power, beauty, and soul, and their entire line up so far has lived up to it. So, does the Rapide live up to it as well? In short, yes. The Rapide has the power. It has the beauty. And it definitely has the soul, but I have managed to find one flaw with it--while you're on the inside of it, you can't see its stunning body on the outside.

Different Types Of Diesel Engine

A lot of car manufacturers are opting for diesel engines nowadays. Different types of cars, ranging from the very small ones to the ones that are all about luxury come with engines now. And the best thing is these engines are no longer considered "dirty". Diesel is now synonymous with the cleanest technologies in fuel and diesel not only takes great care of the engine but also boasts of high fuel efficacy. Diesel was invented in 1893 by Rudolf Diesel and clean diesel technology was brought forth by Volkswagen and Mercedes-Benz, the German car manufacturers.

However if you are interested in diesel engines you will also need to know about the different types of the same. The first type of engine is the Common Rail Direct Injection. This is a pretty modern invention and is based on the principle of direct injection system of an engine. The CRDI will bolster the performance, take care of the engine and improve the mileage. This was invented and developed by Robert Huber, the Fiat Group used it widely and ultimately it was sold to Robert Bosch, the German company. In early 1990s it became extremely popular with urban car buyers because of its several benefits.

The second type of diesel engine is Multijet Fuel Injection. This too, was developed by the Fiat Group. And with this diesel engine system there was a vast improvement in the performance of the CRDI. The engine uses an injector to receive the inputs of fuel to a combustion chamber. The injector is essentially a valve that is spring loaded and it opens and closes at certain fuel pressure thereby producing energy. The multiple points of fuel injection are synchronized and they release a pre-determined amount of fuel in the combustion chamber. The other types of engines are Di Turbocharged and the Naturally Aspirated engine.

Bentleys - The World's Fastest Lorry

Bentleys have always had a reputation for being powerful cars, but as opposed to the Lamborghinis and Ferraris of this world they're also known for being reliable, durable and possessing an almost rugged look when compared to other top cars. They're not like the tiny, sleek, fragile Italian cars. They are beasts.

Because of this, they were referred to as "the world's fastest lorries" in the 1920s by Bugatti, who were their main competitors on the racing circuit at the time. Although Bentley have certainly come a long way and passed from one owner to another a few times, they've stuck by these design decisions to become the cars they are today.

After Volkswagen took over they dramatically increased and modernised the production of Bentleys, increasing the amount that were produced each year. Rather than harming Bentley's reputation as an exclusive car, the increased production brought them back into the eye of the public as one of the luxury car brands. They also became popular with footballers, driving them even further into the limelight. In fact, demand was so large that the Crewe-based factory couldn't keep up, and some of the work had to be moved to Germany temporarily.

Production of four seat convertible models also helped them further, keeping the Bentley image of durability but combining their reputation for making great larger cars with the fashionable convertible models that had proved so popular in recent years.

The manufacturer also presented Queen Elizabeth II with an official state limousine for her Golden Jubilee. The car is now used for official travel to engagements or meetings and to ferry her to and from church whilst she's staying in Balmoral Castle in Scotland or Sandringham House in Norfolk. There's also a special hood ornament which depicts St George slaying the dragon that replaces the flying B seen on other Bentleys whilst the Queen is on board.

Through investment, increasing production and gaining attention through acts like creating a state limousine, Bentley have managed to storm back onto the front line of luxury automobiles in the last decade and have created a wide range of quality cars since then. By recognising what made them popular in the first place and capitalising on that in an age of small, sleek cars, they've really come back to the forecourt.

A Premium Automobile

Introduced by the Mercury Division of the Ford Motor Company in 1955, the Mercury Montclair was advertised as part of Mercury's premium automobile line. Ford historians aren't fully sure where the moniker, Montclair, came from but the general consensus is it is taken from an upper class community of Montclair, New Jersey. The 1956 Montclair was manufactured with some of Mercury's best features which included dual chrome outside rear view mirrors, a dual exhaust, fender skirts and extra chrome trim. It also had various two tone paint combinations. This was probably the best noted feature of the Montclair because the use of contrasting color panels, which ran under the side windows, set the Mercury Montclair apart from their other vehicle lines.

Sleek and Powerful

The 1956 Mercury Montclair included all of Mercury's evolutionary engineering. The '56 Mercury Montclair included factory air, which was a new option in Mercury vehicles as of 1955. The '56 Montclair also offered an "on-demand" low-gear kickdown for an extra cost with Mercury's three speed "Merc-O-Matic" automatic transmission. The "Merc-O-Matic" was actually Ford's first automatic transmission, which was introduced in 1950. In general the transmissions were given the name Ford-O-Matic but when a Mercury vehicles was marketed, it was given the moniker Merc-O-Matic.

The 1956 Mercury Montclair was no slouch when it came to power. It had a large V-8 engine with plenty of horsepower: There were two options available for the 1956 Mercury Montclair:

  • 225hp 312 c.i. V-8
  • 335hp 312 c.i. V-8 with a 4 barrel carburetor

In terms of what type of Mercury Montclair was produced in 1956, here is the actual production breakdown:

  • Convertible: 7,762
  • Hardtop Sport Coupe: 50,562,
  • Phaeton Hardtop Sedan: 23,493

The hardtop sport coupes were produced the most while the convertibles were fairly limited in production in 1956.

Since the Montclair was a premium Mercury vehicle, the interior would have sported upholstery that was comprised of leather and vinyl.

A Real Collector Car

Overall, the 1956 Mercury Montclair was a car with burly good looks with a bit of flash. It had a V-8 engine that was modern for the time and powerful. It has been a somewhat under appreciated model, so it can be hard to find the '56 Mercury Montclair as they are fairly scarce. This has made it a real collector car with a rapidly rising collector value. You have to be careful though, if you are looking to find one of these and restore it, as the parts can be as difficult to find as the cars themselves.

The 1959 Cadillac

The 1959 Cadillac was a car that practically had it all: performance, comfort, and best of all it was a great looking automobile. The Cadillac was a symbol of success and to own one of these babies meant you "had arrived". With their flamboyantly high tailfins and jet pod taillights, you either fell in love with this car or you hated it. To describe any car in a single word is difficult but for the 1959 Cadillac, one word definitely comes to mind - excellence.

Monster Tailfins and Chrome Grille Teeth

Besides the style and glitz of the "monster" tailfins, the grille work in the front of the 1959 Cadillac was a glittering eye-catching set of chrome teeth. As if that wasn't enough grille, even the rear sported a smaller toothy chrome grille. You could also describe the 1959 Cadillac with the word "massive". The new front bumper on the 1959 Cadillac was massive. It probably had to be since it housed the parking and turn signal lights as a pair in pods on its outer ends. The Cadillac also had a new rear bumper and like the front, it too was massive. The rear bumper had chrome outer pods which housed the backup lights.

Everything Falls Into Place

For the 1959 Cadillac, everything seemed to fall into place. In 1959, General Motors was working to produce all-new vehicles. This meant a major re-design effort for the 1959 Cadillac.

Second, although a lesser known fact, the 1959 Cadillac's design revolved around a Buick door. As this was the case, the Buick's door had a taper which dictated the Cadillac's rearward taper.

Finally, the head of design at Cadillac, Ed Glowacke, wanted the 1959 Cadillac to have a new design that was innovative and state-of-the-art. The work to design the 1959 Cadillac officially began in mid-1956.

We all know about the distinctive tailfins. To make the car look more expensive, twin taillights were added. The 1959 Cadillac also had a very striking feeling of openness about it. This is because 1959 was a "greenhouse year" for GM and their full lineup of cars boasted a number of visibility compliments. When sitting in a '59 Cadillac, a driver could enjoy an unobstructed view in all directions. Buyers also had the ability to choose from two roof designs; a traditional curved roof or a "blade-upper" flat roof that was more radical in design. Either would create a fully lavish and open view.

Other notables about the 1959 Cadillac include:

· Cadillac shared parts from other GM cars (mainly structural pieces hidden from view)
· The windshield was extremely curved (caused GM to rethink the placement of controls and switches)
· Hydra-Matic automatic transmission, power steering and power brakes were standard
· The '59 Cadillac came with many options: cruise control, air suspension, electric door locks, and a power trunk are a few.

The 1959 Cadillac, also known as a '59 Caddy, was 225 inches from bumper to bumper and had a wheelbase that was 130 inches. The 1959 Cadillac also used the exceptionally strong tubular-center X-frame which allowed the vehicle to sit lower which improved its handling and its appearance. The '59 Caddy's engine was a 390 cid V-8 that produced 325 horsepower and it was equipped with a four-barrel carburetor and dual exhausts.

In 1959, Cadillac had six series available:

Series 6200

6300 (DeVille)

6400 Eldorados

6900 Eldorados

Sixty Special Fleetwood

6700 Fleetwood 7

The 1959 Cadillac is a classic and today it is a highly appreciated and sought-after car. No other vehicle design better characterizes the auto industry during the late 1950's than the flamboyant 1959 Cadillac.

Classic Car Years - 1970, 1969, 1967?

1970 - Remembering the Time, Hot Cars, Hot Music, and the beginning of the end for true muscle cars...

The classic 1970's car is a memory of a hot time in our American history. 1970's Classic cars, heavy metal music, all humming along the streets and highways of America. Hot cars with the music streaming from the inside of our cars, in competition with the engines that roared unmercifully along with the headers that amplified our exhaust systems to the max.

Thirty Years ago, where did the time go? NOW it's a Classic?

1970, hard to realize that these special cars are now classics? The Pontiac TransAm, Firebird, or the Ford Mustang, all are classics to hold on to for another lifetime of enjoyment. No longer kids now, as we were young men driving fast, burning gas, at pennies a gallon, distancing ourselves from our parents and authority figures. Now we search and seek out the car, "restore the bird", feel the power in the Mustang, and crank the engines for long stretches on the highways. Thirty years, where did the time go?

Hey, Hey, rebuilding 1969 and 1967 classic cars, forever in our memories, forever in our garages!!!

You know what we're talking about, 1969 Chevelle Super Sport, rebuild, restore, relive the classic car forever in your own home. Rebuilding a classic car, driving, and storing these true American Classics brings generations together, from those owning these original cars to the people who are now, rebuilding, restoring, and driving these classic cars, along with all of the pride and enthusiasm shown for the cars, just like it was 1967 all over again. Restore and refurbish a Shelby Cobra, the big engine, the fast drive, the gears banging, and the heart pounding. Restore that GTO, find the right big block engine, leather interior, smooth, sleek body. Drive it, store it, auction it off to someone else and then start again and again to restore, rebuild and refinish a classic car of your dreams.

High Compression Engines, Big Blocks, emissions?

1970 rolls around, governments get serious about pollution, emissions is born, and the high performance, high horsepowered engines are not part of "the muscle car". So how can a muscle car run without high horsepower?? Can't drive a real, deal muscle car with emissions strapped to the engine, so special order engines are born, mechanics know how to re-invent and build the big blocks. This is smart American ingenuity at it's finest! Build the right engine for the right car and the car fanatics will come!

Ferrari 250 GT 'Tour De France': One of the Most Beautiful Cars Ever Made

From 1954 to 1959, Ferrari manufactured approximately 100 long wheel base (LWB) chassis, 250 GT coupes. They were aimed primarily at doing battle in sports car endurance racing events world wide. These beautiful cars hold the distinction of being the longest running road and race production series in Ferrari's history! Shortly after their introduction, one of the very first variants won at the 1956 Bahamas Race Week, held in Nassau. This win was to be the beginning of Ferrari's domination of GT racing with three-liter sports cars.

As they crushed their competition in races like the Tour de France (TdF), as well as other important sports car events, these Ferrari's became the ride of choice among top drivers of the period. Starting in the city of Nice and taking several days and over 3000 miles to run, The Tour de France was a prestigious event in GT racing of that time. In true rally fashion, it tested car design and ability, as well as driver's skill and endurance. The Tour de France punished both car and driver in grueling road rally, circuit and hill climb stages. This mega-race was so hard that in some years of it's running; 70% of entrants would never finish to take the checkered flag! After Ferrari took the top three places at the 1957 TdF, the organizers lent their event's name to this winning car that seemed to own the race.

The one thing that is common to these one hundred legendary cars is their 3 liter engine. The design of this engine was headed by Gioacchino Colombo and would be the smaller of two engines developed by Ferrari. After a very serious accident at LeMans in 1955, the three liter displacement limit was imposed by race officials in an attempt to slow cars, get them slightly more balanced in the area of power to weight and ultimately lessen the chance of high speed accidents. This powerplant was the answer to those new restrictions. Ferrari's new three liter engine was still fully capable of producing 230 to 250 horsepower with plenty of torque to slingshot the little GT car to winning speeds.

Each LWB chassis received a hand-crafted body. The look was based on several Pinin Farina show cars. Most bodies were built by Scaglietti & Co, however, Zagato (of Milan) who was revered for their lightweight construction techniques, bodied some consistently competitive examples. Continuous development, and bodies crafted by hand make no two 250 GT Berlinettas the same. Changes made to the body from year to year, as well as subtle details such as sliding or wind-up windows, cowled, covered or open headlights; not to mention an array of hood louvers and scoops give each car a unique personality. The first TdF's were fashioned after the Ferrari 250 Mille Miglia, both sporting rear ends much like Aston Martin's DB5. Later appearance changes included smaller rear windscreens, the addition of C pillar louvers to aid cockpit cooling and more pronounced rear fenders. By 1959, a new front end included open headlights to comply with Italian law.

To see these cars in action is breathtaking. They are beautiful to watch and deadly to compete against. I've seen old black and white footage of the 1960 Grand Prix D'Europe (TdF) which shows these cars at their competitive best. You need to watch them in action to fully understand what they were to auto racing history and fine car design.
